It Didn't Start with You

It Didn't Start with You delves into the idea that the emotional struggles, mental health issues, and trauma we experience may not always originate from our own lives, but rather from the unresolved traumas of our ancestors. Mark Wolynn, a psychotherapist, explains how the traumas of previous generations can be passed down through various mechanisms, influencing our behaviors, emotions, and relationships without us even realizing it.

The book covers a range of topics related to inherited trauma, including how it manifests in our bodies, minds, and relationships. Wolynn introduces the concept of family constellations, a therapeutic approach that uncovers the hidden patterns in a family’s history. Through case studies, personal anecdotes, and practical exercises, It Didn’t Start with You helps readers recognize how they may be carrying the unresolved pain of past generations and guides them toward healing.

By identifying and breaking these patterns, the book empowers readers to free themselves from generational trauma and live more fulfilling, emotionally healthy lives. Wolynn provides techniques for recognizing inherited trauma and offers steps for healing it, both for individuals and their families.
