About Reflections On the Guillotine
Albert Camus's Reflections on the Guillotine is a landmark essay that challenges the moral and philosophical foundations of capital punishment.
Albert Camus's Reflections on the Guillotine is a landmark essay that challenges the moral and philosophical foundations of capital punishment. Drawing on history, philosophy and moral reasoning, he challenges the state's right to take human life, arguing that judicial execution neither deters crime nor serves true justice.
Written with clarity, compassion and intellectual rigour, the essay examines the ethics of punishment, the value of human dignity and the limits of political power. A powerful reflection on justice and conscience, it remains a profoundly relevant work in debates surrounding crime, punishment and the sanctity of human life. Albert Camus was a French-Algerian writer, philosopher and journalist. He was born in Mondovi, French Algeria on November 7, 1913. Although not trained as a philosopher, he contributed towards the avant-garde twentieth-century philosophical ideas of Absurdism in the form of essays, novels, reviews and articles. He also became active in the resistance against the colonial French government and served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Combat from 1944 to 1947.
