Teachings of Rumi

Edward Henry Whinfield was a renowned 19th-century Persian scholar and translator, best known for his English renderings of classical Islamic texts. His translation and commentary on The Masnavi—the monumental work by Jalaluddin Rumi—remains a significant contribution to the study of Sufism and Islamic mysticism.

Whinfield’s work opened the door for English-speaking audiences to experience Rumi’s profound spiritual insights, poetic genius, and philosophical depth. With scholarly precision and deep respect for the original text, Whinfield’s translation preserves the lyrical and allegorical richness of Rumi’s verses while making them accessible to readers unfamiliar with Persian literature or Sufi theology.

Through his efforts, Whinfield helped bridge Eastern and Western literary traditions and advanced global understanding of the spiritual teachings embedded in Rumi's writings. His translation continues to be a valuable resource for students of religion, mysticism, poetry, and Middle Eastern literature.
