This Is Shakespeare

In This Is Shakespeare, renowned scholar James Shapiro provides a compelling introduction to the works of William Shakespeare, offering readers a deep yet approachable understanding of the playwright’s life, times, and the enduring significance of his plays. Shapiro focuses not just on the texts themselves, but also on the challenges of interpreting Shakespeare's intentions, the historical and social conditions of Elizabethan England, and the way Shakespeare’s works continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.

Shapiro's approach is grounded in scholarly research but is written in an engaging, non-academic style, making Shakespeare's complex world accessible to all. He examines how Shakespeare's plays reflect the politics, culture, and anxieties of his time, as well as how they have been interpreted and adapted across the centuries. With humor and insight, Shapiro delves into the mysteries of Shakespeare’s life—what we know and, importantly, what we don’t—and the profound impact of his work on literature, theater, and society.
