Warrior Poet: the Life, Times, and Legacy Of Khushal Khan Khattak

Khushal Khan Khattak was a celebrated warrior and Pashtun poet who initially served as a loyal subject of the Mughal Empire before rebelling against its authority. Warrior Poet aims to illuminate not only his remarkable life but also the tumultuous era in which he lived. It explores his struggles and conflicts, both with external foes and those within his own family. The book also features and contextualises his poignant poetry, which echoes these challenges and the inner turmoil.

“Changez Jan claims that he is ‘a humble admirer of history and a storyteller by trade’, whose ‘aim in penning these words was to craft an English language tale surrounding Khushal Khan that would captivate the senses and immerse readers in its depths of history and emotion’. Undoubtedly, by writing this book and translating many important poems of Khushal Khan Khattak into English, he has done a fabulous service to readers interested in the history and politics of modern South Asia, Pashtuns and Pashto. He brings up the new, hitherto neglected, dynamics of Khushal Khan Khattak’s life to readers in and outside of South Asia. Following the modern techniques of history writing, Jan presents a lucid and authentic account of the life and times of Khushal Khan Khattak, which is totally worth reading.” -Dr Wiqar Ali Shah, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad
