The Double (Readings Classics)

Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin is an anxious and socially awkward clerk whose fragile world begins to unravel with the sudden appearance of his double, a charming, confident replica who infiltrates his life and slowly supplants him. As Golyadkin’s grip on reality loosens, he is drawn into a nightmarish spiral of paranoia, humiliation, and existential dread. Written early in Dostoyevsky’s career, The Double anticipates the psychological depth and thematic complexity of his later masterpieces. It is a haunting exploration of self-division, societal pressure, and the fragility of the human psyche, delivered with biting satire and surreal intensity.
